DENSO WAVE to release new VS-Series 6-axis compact robots—world's fastest, slimmest robots of their class, and with the world's first all-internally wired design
~Compact, high-speed, user-friendly, globally deployable~

TOKYO, JAPAN, 25 May, 2010 – DENSO WAVE INCORPORATED will release its new high performance and more user-friendly VS-Series compact six-axis robots in November 2010. The robots are the world's fastest and have the slimmest arms in their class of small industrial robots. They also feature the world's first design to have all linking wires embedded inside and to the end of the robot's arm, which saves valuable space on the factory floor.

"World's first," "world's fastest," and "world's slimmest" for small industrial robots with arm length ranging from 500 to 875mm and payload capacities from 4 to 7kg based on company research conducted in May 2010.

"Today’s marketplace requires value-added, high-quality and low-cost products, and manufacturing equipment must increasingly operate at higher speeds, be more compact and user friendly," said Toyohiko Ito, Director and Senior Managing Exective Officer overseeing DENSO WAVE's Industrial Robotics Division. "The performance specifications and functions of the new VS-Series robots are developed to meet these requirements in the global market."

“We used LabVIEW to integrate a DENSO VS-6577 robot with spectral analyzers into a fully automated analytical test station without the need to learn another robotics programming language,” said Dylan Jones, principal scientist at Genzyme. “The ImagingLab Robotics Library for DENSO was an off-the-shelf solution for integrating the robotic arm. Conservatively, we estimate that with this test station we will achieve a tenfold increase in analytical throughput.” ‬

Four different VS Series models will be released, with arm lengths ranging from 500 to 875 mm and payload capacities from 4 to 7 kg. In addition, they are available in many different models, to handle a wide variety of applications. For example, dust- and waterproof models are available for harsh environments such as inside Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines. The cleanroom models are available for the electronics and medical industries. The new robots are compliant with global safety standards.

With the robots performance specifications and functions based on the demands of the global market, DENSO WAVE expects to sell 5,000 units per year.

The VS-Series robots will be sold through DENSO CORP.'s sales offices.* In Japan, the robots will be sold through DENSO FA distributors.

Prior to the release, the new robots will be displayed at the Automatica Trade Fair in Munich, Germany, June 8-11, 2010.

Features(based on 875-mm-arm length model)

1.High speed: World's fastest
・10m/sec composite speed—22 percent faster than previous model
・0.33 sec cycle time**—31 percent faster than previous model
・World's highest speed achieved through an optimized arm design, enabling lighter weight at same level of rigidity, and improved performance of arm-operating motor

2.Compact arm: World's slimmest
・235 mm maximum arm width—16 percent slimmer than previous model
・World's slimmest arm made possible by reducing the size of the motor, redesigning the layout of components and optimizing the shape of the arm
・The robot's compact size and slim arm reduces interference with other equipment

3.Reliable, all-internal wiring: World's first
・World's first design to have linking wiring for power, electric signals and Ethernet embedded inside the arm and up to the end-of-arm flange. This was made possible by innovative new technology for downsizing wire
・Easier to wire or mount end-effector and/or camera on flange part of arm
・No interference with external wires and no tangled wires to limit arm movement
・Higher reliability due to elimination of potential external wire breakage

4.Expanded operating range
・Optimized arm shape reduces dead space and expands work envelope
・Bottom-connector option facilitates integration (see #6 below)

5.High payload capacity
・Achieves 7 kg — 6kg in previous model

6.Wide range of models
Wide range of models accommodates many different applications:. Floor-, celing- or wall- mount is available on each model.
・Dust- and waterproof model Both arm and base are protected; allows use with fluids such as cutting oil used
              inside CNC machines
・Cleanroom model Available for cleanroom environment
・Bottom-connector model Eliminates connector from back of base, expanding operating
             work envelope and facilitating integration
・Global model Complies with global safety standards (UL, CE and RoHS)***

* There are nine DENSO CORPORATION robot sales offices, including DENSO Europe B.V., DENSO Sales California and others in Asia
** Time required for robot to lift a part 25 mm high, move it 300 mm and return it to the starting point
*** UL (Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.), CE (an EU standard), RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances)
